Setting up your groups and knockouts (advanced)

Please note that the instructions below are somewhat visually outdated. We will look to update this help guide as soon as possible.

Note: I'd recommend first watching this video as it (hopefully!) explains the process clearly.

In TorneoPal we separate the setup of a tournament into two stages.

Stage 1 - the group stage (normally a mini league format, where teams play against each other). There is normally more than one group per age category. i.e. Groups A, B, C, D.

Stage 2 - the finals stage (normally a knockout cup, or a cup where matches are played for final places, i.e. teams are not knocked out). There is normally more than one cup also, i.e. Cup, Plate, Shield etc.

In this guide, we will show you how to first create Stage 1, and then create Stage 2.

Stage 1

When you navigate to the Groups tab in your first age category you will see a screen like this. πŸ‘‡

We are creating the group stage first so click on the Create Group Stage button, and you will be asked to enter the details of the groups you'd like to create. πŸ‘‡

  1. Choose the number of teams you have. (☝️in this example 16)
  2. Choose the number of groups using the slider (in this example 4 groups of 4 teams)
  3. This is the tricky bit πŸ˜€. Choose how many teams from each group will continue to Level I and how many go to Level II (i.e. Cup and Plate) in this example 2 in each group go to the cup, and 2 from each group go to the plate. If you have a strange setup don't worry, these can be changed later.
  4. Choose the total match time including breaks, i.e. if you want to have matches every 30 minutes, choose 30, even if the actual match times are 25 min)
  5. The choose if you prefer group letters, i.e. A,B,C,D or 1,2,3,4.
  6. Finally choose if you want this to be published when the tournament is published, and click Create group stage.

Please note that we're aware of a bug, which we are working to fix as soon as possible. If the confirmation message below is displayed, click the call-to-action button (the one with solid coloring, labeled 'poistu').

The color of the button might vary depending on your browser settings.

Stage 2

The groups will be created and you will see the groups have been created, but Stage 2 has not yet been created, so we will do that now.

Click on Create Stage 2 and you will be asked to enter the details of the cups you'd like to create. It looks like this πŸ‘‡

The system understands that you want eight teams in the first cup and also in the second cup. In this example, the cups are named 1-8 and 9-16. The default names for the cup are like this - they follow the rankings.

You can see from the dropdown menu what type of competitions you can choose. Here's an explanation for each one:

  • Knockout - a simple cup, eg. Quarter-final -> Semi-final -> Final
  • Round Robin - a simple league, i.e. teams playing each other once.
  • Knockout + 3rd place playoff - a simple cup with the losing semi-finalists playing each other like the World Cup.
  • Knockout with full standings - a kind of cup competition where the losers do not get eliminated, and continue to play so that all final positions are played for and most teams play an equal number of games.

Choose which one you would like and click the Add groups button.

This article shows you how to create pretty standard Stage 1 and Stage 2. I am building more detailed tutorials for stranger setups, including the best runner-up. In the meantime, you can just ask via email or chat.
